The New Zealand Young Nats are thrilled at Parliament’s decision to keep the alcohol purchase age at 18 years.

“They threw everything at us, we were up against the odds but in the face of fear and hype young New Zealanders have rightly had their voices heard” says Young Nats President Sean Topham.

“Over 25,000 young people got in behind the Keep it 18 campaign on social media, they supported taking real action to tackle our heavy drinking culture, they have lobbied their Members of Parliament to support alcohol law reforms that would change the habits of drinkers, not the age.”

“We support many of the liquor law reforms proposed by the Government and we do so because they provide actual solutions for curtailing the drinking culture that affects all age groups.”

The Young Nats firmly believe in the individual freedoms and rights we all enjoy and that age has nothing to do with it.

“The Young Nats were proud to champion this cause to all our National Party Members of Parliament”

“At the end of months of misleading opposition this is a huge victory for 18 and 19 year olds across the country.”

The Young Nats are pleased that the Marriage Equality Amendment Bill has passed its first reading with 80 votes in support from Members of Parliament.

“Young Nats have been lobbying National MPs from day one and we are delighted that so many have cast their historic votes for marriage equality,” says Young Nats President, Sean Topham.

“There is still a long way to go but we will be standing alongside the overwhelming majority of young Kiwis who believe in freedom and equal opportunity and who want to see this Bill become law,” says Topham.

Sean Topham has been elected as Young Nationals President at the New Zealand Young Nationals Conference in Auckland this weekend.

“It’s time to make our voice strong in John Key’s National-led Government by growing our resources, developing our activism and re-communicating our vision to young New Zealanders” saysTopham.

His new leadership team will consist of Shaun Wallis (Vice President), Megan Hands (Policy Officer), Sam MacDonald (National Secretary) and Mark Nicholson (Treasurer).

Topham’s new executive plans to refresh the organisation in the lead up to the 2014 election.

“We’ve got some awesome plans in store as we begin to roll out a bold and ambitious agenda over the next year.”

“Now more than ever, individual freedom must not be put at risk by a Winston-led Labour-Green Government that will hold New Zealand back.”

On Saturday night hundreds of Young Nats were joined by the Prime Minister Rt. Hon John Key, former Prime Minister Rt. Hon Dame Jenny Shipley, former National Party Leader Dr. Don Brash, Members of Parliament and businesses and community leaders, at the Auckland War Memorial Museum to celebrate the Young Nats 75th Anniversary.

“It was a terrific night to reflect and celebrate 75 years as New Zealand’s oldest political youth movement”, says Young Nats President Daniel Fielding.

“The Ball also gave us a unique opportunity to do something special and highlight the remarkable contribution young people make to our country.

“We held a charity auction to raise funds for the UC Student Volunteer Army in Christchurch to aid their rebuild effort.”

The charity auction raised over $10,000 for the UC Student Volunteer Army who will use these funds for their ongoing work in Canterbury.

“The choice to support the UC Student Volunteer Army was an easy one, it’s about young people backing each other. We couldn’t think of any greater way than to use our networks, ideas and abilities to support those in Christchurch who need our help most”, says Mr Fielding.

“I would like to thank everyone who has joined the Young Nats journey over the last 75 years, the team who put the Ball together, and especially to all those who gave generous support to the auction for the UC Student Volunteer Army.”
